Three Ways to Dry a Dogs Coat Properly

Regardless of your dogs breed, grooming is an important part of your pet’s hygiene along with helping to keep it healthy and looking its best. Grooming involves brushing, cutting, bathing and drying the dog’s coat. If you do not dry your pets coat properly, it can cause skin problems and look messy. Three methods used to dry the dogs coat include towel drying, fluff drying and cage drying.

Towel drying a dog is certainly the most popular of the three dog-drying methods. It is a the most common and easiest method to use at home and works well on both shorthaired small dogs and larger shorthaired dogs including the Miniature Pinscher, Chihuahua and Toy Manchester Terrier. Dogs with short hair naturally towel dry quicker so a gentle brisk rub using a fluffy, clean towel does a very good job. Once towel dried, keep the dog indoors and out of drafts until its skin and fur are thoroughly dry.

Fluff drying is the technique most frequently used at dog grooming centers and works especially well on dogs with long hair. They use this poplar method on show dogs such as poodles and other breeds that include Maltese, Old English Sheepdogs and Afghans. Although it is a little more difficult than towel drying a dog, the special techniques involved in the fluff drying method do not take long to learn.

Using a floor or hand dryer set on high, dry the dog’s hair in small sections thoroughly drying and straightening the coat before moving on to the next area. Brush the hair in even, quick, upward strokes, while the warm air from the blower dries the section and then move on to another section repeating the process until the dog is completely dry. Be sure to pay special attention to areas such as their stomach, ears and head.

The third method to dry a dogs coat is kennel or cage drying which takes longer than both towel drying and fluff drying. Most commonly used on shorthaired dogs or dogs that do not need straight or fluffed hair, a cage dryer or fan is clipped onto the dogs cage blowing on the animal until its coat is completely dry. Always place a towel in the cage bottom and make sure there is sufficient ventilation on the sides and top of the cage. Use the table if your dog is too large to cage dry safely.

Hi Ryan,

I have a LARGE half black lab and half chow dog. Needless to say shedding is a BIG issue for me. If I start fluff drying him will this help get the hair off?

Thanks,ShellyB

I recently found a great solution. Microfiber pet care complect. It makes my Akim dry very fast. In seconds. I bought them in the internet on one Norwex consultants shop. Can leave a link, if it will not be deleted - http://huiminmu.norwex.biz/?p=n§id=4&cid=1&pid
