There’s No Place Like a Place With a Neon Sign

Whoever discovered that neon gas glows when charged with electricity was a true genius. That person’s discovery, coupled with glass benders’ abilities to shape glass into letters and shapes, have made the neon sign one of the most recognizable symbols of the 20th century.
How many times have you been driving along the highway and been relieved to see a neon sign glowing in the night? To a hungry traveler, the “Open” sign radiating from a window is a blessing - almost as good as “Open 24 hours.” The “Vacancy” sign is another relief to weary travelers looking for a place to stay, unless, of course, the owner of the establishment has turned on the “No” in front of the word.
Then there are the neon beer signs. You tend to see these in dorm rooms as well as bars and restaurants, but seeing an advertisement for your favorite alcoholic beverage is a sign that you’ve found a friendly place. It’s more of an endorsement than an advertisement.
Custom neon signs became popular during the early part of the 20th century. At first, they were a novelty, as people were fascinated by the “liquid fire” resonating through the tubes. Owners of the signs kept them on even during daylight hours, and they attracted a lot of attention – and business. As the technology progressed, manufacturers began experimenting with different colors and making the signs more intricate and detailed.
LED lights and lasers have created a new level of entertainment and value for decoration and signs, and these signs have begun to replace the old neon signs. But nothing is as retro and vintage as neon. Like lava lamps and cigar store Indians, its kitschy symbolism brings a smile to many faces, and there will always be a place for them in businesses and bachelor pads.
