If you own a new puppy, there are many of things that need to be learned that includes both you and your pet. One important lesson that your dog is going to learn from the beginning that biting is forbidden! Just like humans beings, dogs are considered to be creatures of habit too. That’s why it’s important to help your them to break bad habits , from the beginning because when they get older, it will be very difficult to break certain habits. A puppy may get away with nipping but biting cannot be ignored. Allowing your dog to bite can cause harm to your family and strangers. Make sure that you take extra time to learn how to teach your puppy about not biting and how to get rid of this habit.
A dog owner can learn a great deal from how to keep a young dog from biting by studying older dogs deal with them. When a young dog bites its mother, the mother dog will actually yelp sharply. If your dog continues, he will walk away refusing to play with the puppy for a while. Feel free to take this exact method and use it for yourself. Now, when you dog becomes overly vigorous or completely stops paying attention to how hard the dog is biting and simply say “ow!” in a loud sharp voice. This will actually frighten your puppy into stopping his unacceptable behavior. If your young dog starts this behavior once again, just walk away from him and don’t pay any attention to him/her for a period. Your puppy will get the point and realize that when he/she bites too much, this will cause his playtime to cease.
Lastly, but certainly not least, during training, teach your puppy not to bite. Keep in mind that you should not get yourself involved in games such as tug of war with your puppy. This is often considered a very confusing thing for a young puppy to handle, so it is advisable to avoid these types of games for a while. You can also dress your puppy in cute dog clothing and take them for walks. Avoid horse play or tumble games for a while. As you can see, there are plenty ways to stop your puppy from biting. Take some time and think about the techniques you want to utilize.
Make sure that you understand that biting is natural puppy behavior. A puppy that always bites and nips is not necessarily a vicious animal. Your dog is just exploring his new with the tools that are available to him such as his mouth. So your dog’s mouthing is also a way for him to exercise his muscles and learning how much strength he actually has. Dogs that have a habit playing with one another will actually bite for fun all day if given the opportunity.
When preparing deal with puppy biting, don’t forget that you must not reprimand or even punish your dog unless you catch him red handed. Now, there is an exception to this rule when he biting you while you are reprimanding him. There are ways to correct your dog’s behavior without hitting him. A young dog that gets smacked or punched is going grows up to easily get startled and completely confused. This is the wrong road to take when you want your puppy to grow up happy and healthy so that you can play with dog toys and have fun!
