The kitchen in most homes is a very popular place and the heart of the home. It is a place where family, relatives and friends gather for meals and socialize. Because the kitchen is one of the busiest and most lived in rooms in the house, it is important to keep it practical, updated, efficient, functional, beautiful and cozy. Major renovations are often very costly and not in every homeowners budget but there are several affordable kitchen upgrades that will update a tired looking kitchen.

Painting the kitchen cabinets will make a big impact on the appearance and is a relatively inexpensive but a time-consuming upgrade. Over time, stains, grease, food residue, heat and water mar the kitchen cabinets but instead of spending thousands of dollars replacing them, paint the cabinets, giving them a facelift. Be sure to use a primer and paint made specifically for kitchen cabinets. Select an oil-base primer instead of water base primer because it stands up well and the paint adheres to it better. For a more professional look, you should paint the inside of the cabinets. One of the most important steps is cleaning the cabinets before painting to remove any grease or dirt and checking for any damage or cracks that paint will not hide or cover. Remove the doors and hardware before painting and always leave the required amount of time between coats. Once the kitchen cabinets are painted and looking clean, fresh and new, be sure to replace the hinges, handles, knobs and other hardware to finish the cabinet upgrade.

Installing a new kitchen sink and faucet will certainly modernize and brighten a kitchen quickly and inexpensively. There are several faucet styles available on the market today and three of the most common, basic styles are the widespread faucet, the single handle faucet and the two-handle faucet. It is important to select your sink and then the facet. A widespread faucet has the spout, cold and hot water valves mounted separately to the sink whereas the single handle faucet uses one lever that is center set to dispense the cold and hot water. The center set style is a two-handle faucet with one handle for cold water and one handle for hot water. Faucets come in a large array of finishes including stainless steel, brushed nickel, chrome, brass and oil rubbed bronze.

New lighting is a kitchen upgrade that makes such a difference in the overall appearance of the kitchen and sets the mood. Replace out of date lighting with modern styles such as tract lighting, recessed lighting and ceiling fan with lights combination. Another kitchen upgrade that is inexpensive and easy to install is task lighting and under-cabinet lights. This gives you a reliable light source for working and preparing foods under the cabinets on the countertop.

Flooring is a kitchen upgrade that can be a major expense or inexpensive depending upon the size of the kitchen and the type of flooring selected. If you shop around, replacing an old vinyl floor with a new vinyl floor is relatively inexpensive but replacing it with ceramic tile or slate can be very costly.
