Once you understand why he keeps barking, you can reduce your dog's annoying barking habits.

All dogs crave for extra attention. One way that they try to get attention is by barking. But this can cause aggravation for your entire household and even your neighbors. That’s why it’s important to give your dog a sufficient amount attention. This will help reduce his barking. The funny thing is, when a dog receives negative attention from you, they're actually content because you’re paying extra attention to them.

Most dog owners will place a muzzle on their dog so that they can stop barking. But there is a more effective way to help stop your dog from barking for attention. You have to make sure that you praise your dog – this is the extra attention that he needs. A dog that has enough attention will eventually stop barking. Now, when your dog is barking for attention, ignore him until he stops without yelling at him. Your dog will eventually realize that barking doesn’t work, if he wants attention.

Some dogs bark because they know that if they do, they'll get what they want. They bark at the door to be let outside, the bark at their dishes to get food, and they bark at the counter to get a treat. Because you give them what they want when they bark, they continue the behavior. To retrain this annoying behavior, try giving our dog what it wants when it's quiet.

Dogs that bark when they're left alone are often referred to as dogs with “separation anxiety”. Dogs with this condition will bark all day long while the owner is away from home for a long period of time. A constant barking dog can be compared to a car alarm that constantly beeps when the owner is away. Dog barkers tend to behave in two stages - first, they're lonely. Second, they aren't used to your daily routine, so it's mind boggling to them to be left alone without knowing when you'll be back home. Retraining this kind of dog barker takes a little more work. However, it is worth the patience it takes to show your pet dog that it's okay if you're gone for a long period of time.

In addition to retraining your dog, while using positive reinforcement, there is one easy step that you can do to help curbing your dog's barking habit. Make certain that your home has plenty of plush dog toys. I your dog have a variety of toys; you may not have to be too concerned about barking as much.

When dogs play with their toys, they use their mouths and paws. Dogs with a lot of dog toys are the ones who tend to be the most occupied when the owner is not present. Some dogs play with their toys so much that many of them will fall into a peaceful slumber on their large dog beds, which is always good – especially to the human ears!

Lastly, always remember that dogs bark in order to communicate. Even though training your dog not to constantly bark is a great accomplishment he should still feel that he’s able to communicate with you – that’s what best friends are for! Make sure that you are patient and give your dog positive attention that he needs on a daily basis.
