There are not many dogs which have a more colorful history than the Bulldog. Despite its mean looking facial features, the dog is a delightful pet and extremely loving. The Bulldog was once used in the entertainment business. The dog was taught to bite bulls on the nose to control it. Most times it worked in the favor of the dog but mishaps were common. Today, the bulldog is used for no such purpose.

Most people seem hesitant to have the bulldog as a pet because they are afraid. Infact the face does not even remotely reflect is disposition. It is a very loving animal, gentle and kind. The one characteristic of most bull dogs is their habit of pleasing the owner and being careful around children. It is unheard of a bulldog to be rough with a child. However, like most dogs the bulldog is weary of other dogs and can become aggressive. Once acquired as a puppy the dog does become attached and remains a life long friend.

Upkeep and Maintenance

The bulldog is not a dog for apartment owners. Even though the dog appears to be lazy and sleepy, it loves to walk and go outside. Daily exercises are a must to keep the dog fit and prevent obesity. The dog prefers a low trot and not jogging.

Over the years the bulldog has become accustomed to being an indoor dog. While it likes to go outside, it prefers to be indoors with the owner. It is a family dog and likes to do things with the family. The dog prefers mild warm weather. Two things the bull dog dislikes are the water and cold frigid temperatures.

The Bulldog is not easy to groom. It is a large dog and has a very odd frontal shape. Thus, one has to take care when grooming. The dogs needs regular grooming because it does tend to slurp around the face area. Most experts recommend that once or twice a week grooming of the dog should be adequate.

Health Information

The bulldog does have a fair share of medical problems. The most common medical ailments which affect the bulldog include narrow nasal passages, shoulder dislocations, heart defects and oral cavity problems. Female bull dogs are also prone to prolapse of the bladder and uterus. Drooling is a normal part of the dog’s features and one should not be overtly concerned about it.

Bulldogs live anywhere from 10-12 years. The major health problems start around the age of 8 and include joint disease around the shoulder. After this age, it is recommended that all owners regularly take to dog to a veterinarian for routine medical screening.
