Bringing a New Puppy Home To Your Family
68
There are so many things to teach a new puppy when you first bring them home. You have to teach it everything it needs to be a well-behaved pooch. The hardest two tasks to teach a new puppy are where they sleep and where they go to go potty.
A new puppy will cry and whimper for hours sometimes in it bed you have made for them. It wants to be with you not where you have put it to go to sleep. Place a blanket or piece of clothing that has your smell on it on their small dog beds or area you have made for it. This whining usually passes in a few nights.
Don't give up trying to get the pup to sleep on their own. These nights will pass and then the pup will actually be happy to have their own bed. It will be peaceful at night again.
The other task that has to be tackled is housebreaking. This is as much to do about training you as it is the puppy. If you are just giving the puppy run of the house you have your work cut out for you. Be prepared to follow the pup throughout your house every waking moment. It will tinkle and poop anywhere it decides to. You can hope you catch them in time to take them outside to do their business.
It is much easier to confine the pup to its own area of the house. You can make sure they are on a tile or vinyl floor that is easy to clean up if they have accidents. Using puppy pads is a great way to guide the puppy to a particular spot in the house for them to relieve themselves. These pads have a scent added to them to attract the pups to them. They also have a plastic backing, so you just roll up the mess through in the trash and lay down a new pad.
After the puppy eats its food it should be taken outside to see if they need to go to the bathroom. Then throughout the day they need to be taken out. After awhile the pups catch on and even whine at the door to go outside for a potty break.
Housebreaking can be the most trying thing to train a puppy at. You don't want your carpet all stained up and it can be hassle getting the smell out of it. Even professional cleaning can fail at this sometimes. So you really have to commit to doing this the right way. You may want to consider training your dog using small dog collars & leashes and take them outside.
Some people choose to crate train their puppy. This is where no food or water in put into the crate. It is only for sleeping, puppies and dogs do not like to soil their beds. So right upon being let out of the crate the pups need to be taken outside to the bathroom. Then before they go back in the crate they are taken outside again.
Having a new puppy is very exciting but not without its responsibilities. This puppy will look for you for guidance. If you do not give it the pup will not know how to behave properly and be unruly. So train you puppy well.
